15:30 -BANJO
- Petr Brandejs
The banjo workshop will make it
possible for you to ask fine pickers questions about different
techniques, left- and right-hand problems, and exercises. You
can find out how to practice, get good timing, play in different
keys, play slow songs, play fast, improvise, record and use
microphones. Experienced players will also explain their approach
to banjo, bluegrass music, and music in general. How? They
will try to demonstrate all this in a few songs/tunes. The
host is Petr Brandejs; his guests are to be announced. |
18:00 - VOCAL HARMONY -
Thierry Schoysman
In the vocal harmony workshop we'll
explain and demonstrate the important topics of how to build
up harmony vocals in duets, trios, and quartets - mostly
in bluegrass but also in other styles. If you have any questions
about harmony singing - what is a tenor? a baritone? how
do I find the right notes to sing? - you can even bring the
song you're having trouble with on CD and we'll analyse it
together with you and the other participants. |

12:00 - MANDOLIN - Kevin Lynch - beginner
/ intermediate
NOTE: The mandolin workshop will not
be an informal concert. Come prepared for work and fun. Be
tuned up and ready to start. This hour will include small-group
instruction, and one-on-one tutoring (if time permits); questions
and dis-cussions are encouraged.
The following is a partial list of our agenda:
- Holding
your instrument (proper ergonomic arm and hand positions)
- Tuning basics (some tips and solutions for intonation
problems)
- Basic right- and left-hand technique
- Plectrum control
and picking direction (up-stroke, down-stroke, and tremolo)
- Bluegrass chord positions
- Simple scales for warm-up and
daily practice
- Rhythm methods (learning to use the mandolin ‘chop’ effectively)
- Learn a simple tune and jam together at the end of the
session |
13:00 - FIDDLE - Joost van Es & Jiri
Kralik
This year’s fiddle workshop will be taught by Joost van
Es, an acclaimed award-winning musician on the fiddle. Joost's
fiddle playing has been recorded on dozens of albums, both
in the Netherlands and abroad. Together with some interesting
guests - among others there will be Jiri Kralik - Joost will
go over different styles of fiddle playing, as well as playing
in a band, backing-up your fellow musicians. Of course he will
demonstrate some tunes, and answer questions from the students
and colleagues. Joost wants to encourage everyone to bring
his or her fiddle! He actually wants EVERYONE to play the fiddle...
You can reach Joost through www.4wdmusic.com or 4wd.music@planet.nl. |
15:30 - PROFESSIONAL BAND: Promoting your music
- Liz Meyer
Singer/songwriter Liz Meyer, alumna of the IBMA
Leadership Bluegrass program, will go over these topics:
1 - Make your bio work for you: Your band bio/info is the
most important part of your demo package or website. What
makes a power-packed bio?
2 - The perfect face for radio:
How to construct your CD booklet for increased airplay. User-friendly
CD packages encourage radio DJs (and everyone else) to play
your music. What information do DJs need? |

12:00 - MANDOLIN - Kevin Lynch - advanced NOTE: The mandolin workshop will not be an informal concert.
Come prepared for work and fun. Be tuned up and ready to start.
This hour will offer a group study session, possibly divided
into more than one group of players. The term ‘advanced’ means
we will be focusing on the more difficult and perhaps even
unusual methods pertaining to bluegrass mandolin playing. How
far we explore the possibilities is up to those players who
participate. Some ideas for us to explore are:
- Proper (ergonomic) arm and hand positions
- Sensible playing
versus over-playing
- Fills and playing ‘backup’ (when
and where / how to support a vocalist) - Lead playing (solos) -
Effective methods in tremolo playing - Positions from the
5th fret and beyond
- Syncopated rhythms (alternative mando ‘chops’)
- Let’s pick one before we go!
Please come prepared with any questions you may have regarding
your own playing, or mandolin playing in general. Our ‘Mando
Panel’ will be happy to answer any questions and help find
solutions to your issues. We will be happy to address any concerns
you may have about specific techniques or issues with your own
instrument. Accomplished ‘inter-mediate’ players
are welcome to attend this ‘advanced’ class. |
13:00 - MUSIC THEORY - Jiri Kralik
This introduction is meant for all musicians, no matter what
level or instrument they play. During this one hour you´ll
be learning about intervals, chords, and how to build the chords.
Also there’s an explanation for how to understand writ-ten
chord signs and how to harmonize and reharmonize the song.
The reason for all this is to show and remind one of this useful
(often forgotten) tool and the way to use it in bluegrass.
I do hope it will help all the participants to improve their
musical skills and understanding. I’m looking forward
to seeing you all at the music theory workshop. Jiri (George)
Kralik, www.fiddlegeorge.com |
18:00 - GUITAR
- Ondra Kozak & Ralph Schut
Hosted by Ondra Kozak
and Ralph Schut, both outstanding guitar players in Europe,
the topic of the guitar workshop will be ‘solid rhythm and simple solo building’.
A must for the bluegrass guitar player who is just getting
started, but also for those who have been playing and want
to improve, or who have specific questions. Learn all about
playing backup, and being out there when it’s your
turn for a solo. |

Friday 18:00 - Saturday 15:30 - Karaoke
Karaoke: your chance to shine at EWOB!
A ‘sing/play along’, for those of you that want to show off.
We have put the Karaoke Bluegrass Band together to accompany you on your
favourite song or tune. All you have to do is:
Sign up when you are at the EWOB festival
Write down your name, the title of the song or tune, the instrument you’re
going to play, the key you’re going to play in, and two extra songs,
in case the band is unfamiliar with your first choice
Be at the workshop room on time
We assume that you sing lead on the chosen song, or do an instrumental solo
on the chosen tune.
Not singing or playing? We’re sure the people who are would like an
audience. You might see some upcoming talent! |
Lessons
Individual lessons on banjo, mandolin, dobro, and guitar

Are you learning to play a bluegrass instrument and looking
for specific solutions to specific problems? No big deal, we're
here to help you out!
Interested?
There will be a sign-up sheet at the information desk.
Sign up for the instrument and teacher of your choice.
The tuition fee will be € 5 for a 20 minute lesson. |
